[Break a Reader’s Heart]

You’d lost track of the days once they’d bled into weeks, and then the weeks had faded into months. For the time you had been locked away in the isolation room, you’d had almost no way of determining the hours as they dwindled, no indication aside from the sounds outside the door. Eventually you’d just given up trying. Your energy was best saved up.

How you had found yourself in a hostage situation with one of the most deranged men currently walking the planet, you still weren’t entirely certain. All you knew was that you had fallen asleep in your apartment one night, and then you had woken up freezing and chained to some ratty old mattress in a supply closet.

That small room had been your home for a while after, with you only being allowed out for bathroom breaks maybe once or twice a day, if you were lucky. Even your food was just brought to you by the man who had stolen you away from your home, a man you had immediately recognized as Councilman Kai Anderson; the very man you had been theorizing about in your articles prior to your abduction.

His actions against you had all but proven that at least some of what you had conspired was true. However, when you’d summoned up the initial courage to demand the reason you were there, he was vague in his response; mysterious almost, and most definitely devious.

Paranoid, and rightfully so in this regard, Kai refused to trust you in any situation for the longest time. Eventually you were allowed to roam the house, but only with him glued to your side, and you were to be escorted back into the closet. Then you were allowed to share his bedroom and given a few more freedoms once you’d proven yourself.

You’d known that the key to your escape would be to earn just enough of his trust to secure a way out. That wasn’t to say your progress wasn’t set back a couple of times, when you got zealous and tried to run before the proper time. That being said, you often found yourself thrown back into what he had referred to as the “isolation room” and locked in there for an undetermined amount of time until he saw fit to let you back out.

Finally you had earned enough of his trust to cook for him without any supervision. It had taken a bit to convince him to let you, under the guise that you wanted to show him that you could be trusted to have more freedom around the house, but eventually he had agreed that you had proven yourself thus far and deserved this opportunity to prove yourself further.

True to your word, you had made dinner for him, but with a bit of a twist. His plate was sprinkled and mixed with a heavy dosage of the arsenic you had found beneath the sink. Earning his trust was like moving a small brick wall through cement; it wasn’t entirely impossible, but it was tedious and not worth it in the end. If you wanted your freedom, you had to fight for it, to the death.

You set his plate down in front of him when he came to sit for dinner. Trying to act natural, especially since he had brought in one of his most loyal followers to stand on guard, you grabbed your own arsenic-free dish and slid into the seat across from him at the kitchen table.

“This looks good, [Y/N],” he complimented before turning to his man. “Speedwagon, come taste it.”

Your face paled as the guard stepped forward, your heart racing. Kai slid his gaze to you and took in the panic that clouded your expression despite how hard you tried to conceal it. His eyes darkened in disappointment that quickly turned to anger as his follower ingested the poison and swiftly succumbed due to the copious amount you had dressed the food with, wanting to ensure that Kai would indeed be dead.

“That’s what I thought.” Before you could think of what to say or do in such a situation, Kai leaped from his chair and yanked you out of yours by the arm. “It’s a shame, he was loyal to the end.”

His grip tight and painful, he dragged you harshly down the hall before throwing you back into isolation. Stumbling as he let go, you fell forward to the mattress, your knees knocking against the cold concrete. The door slammed shut as it often did when you were locked back up in the enclosed space, but this time you could still feel his imposing presence as he remained inside with you.

When you turned yourself around, falling back onto your bottom against the edge of the disgusting piece of worn foam, he was staring you down with a gaze much more intense than you had seen from him before. His arms were tucked firmly over your chest, his expression stern, and his eyes hard.

You swallowed thickly and licked your lips. “Am I going to die?”

The edge of his mouth ticked up into something reminiscent of a smirk for only a second before his features fell straight once more. He was silent, merely staring at you, for a moment longer. A moment that felt like an eternity. You felt like you were the prey being stalked by the predator, like you were waiting for him to lunge and strike with the precision of a cobra. It was torture for you not knowing where your fate lie now that you had attempted to kill him to secure your own liberation.

Finally he shook his head, his lips twitching back up into a small smile. “No. Not by my hand anyway, not now.”

Confused as to what he was planning on doing in retribution, and fearing what possibly awaited you, you frowned and stared at him dubiously. Your eyes radiated the trepidation currently coursing through your veins like debilitating electrical currents.

“There’s something about you that I’m drawn to,” he monologued, stepping closer. “You have this certain fire, this passion, that I admire. Ever since I read your first article about me.”

As he stepped closer, you moved until your back was pressed against the wall. No matter how much distance you attempted to put between him and you, he would always have the upper hand, and being cornered by him in that moment where he could potentially go back on his claim and kill you with his bare hands right there reminded you of how vulnerable to him you were truly were.

“It was always you,” he continued. “No matter how many times I disagreed, it was always you.”

Kai smiled a little broader, the act oozing the mental instability housed within his demented mind, and came closer still. Having nowhere left to go, you found yourself releasing the faintest of whimpers, a truly pathetic sound, as he crouched down before you to be more at eye level. You flinched away as he reached forward, brushing the backs of his fingers across your cheek in a deceitfully soft gesture.

“You’re mine, [Y/N], and I can’t let you go, ever.”

Thank you @fragilelikeabomb0106! This is fantastic and so much better than I ever imagined. I really appreciate it! 💕
